CHRONIQUE D' UN ETE

In the summer of 1960 anthropologist and cinematographer Jean Rouche and sociologist Edgar Morin take the streets of Paris ans Saint Trope in order to meet the working class and ask people if they are happy. The result of this provocative venture is a documentary that changed the route of the newly founded then Nouvelle Vague. It's the moment of birth for "cinéma vérité", an honor to Dziga Vertov, raising at the same time the anthropological documentary to new heights. Directness and personal relation of the creator with the object during filming, as well as self reference become irreplaceable elements of Rouche's work, who is later established as the main representative of "cinéma vérité" in Europe. At the same time filmmakers (with J.L. Goddard among them) borrow elements from his documentaries and embrace them in fiction cinema.
