Room 237

If Stanley Kubrick is still considered one of the most eccentric and legendarily fastidious filmmakers who ever lived, then the same can be said of his fans. In this ingenious documentary, Rodney Ascher explores the different theories that have been developed over the years by film buffs and academics around his ultimate masterpiece, "The Shining".

Why did he choose room number 237 at the infamous Overlook Hotel? Who is Dick Hallorann, really? And what do Native Americans have to do with anything? Smart observations, far-fetched assumptions and outrageous theories are all analyzed during this hilarious documentary by some of Kubrick’s biggest fans, measured against corresponding scenes in an effort to prove them right. Or wrong. Every frame suddenly takes on new meaning as the Holocaust, colonization, Freud and every single thing you can put your mind to is suddenly intertwined with Kubric’s masterpiece, towering over them like a new age monument. But watch out, because as the relentless descend into Kubrick-mania continues, you might find yourself locked in Room 237 right along with the rest of them. Ph.V.
