Faith, Love and Whiskey

Sunrise finds Neli feeling suffocated under a New York highrise, as she watches her own American Dream fade away. Terrified by the prospect of a conventional life, she flees back to her native Bulgaria and reunion with her drifter friends for a taste of freedom. Her love affair with best friend Val will restore some of her lost energy and remind her what it’s like to be alive. But this pleasant little break from reality is suddenly over, as her well-off American fiancé arrives in town, demanding a definitive answer about the future of their relationship. Dreamy 16mm footage from the Bulgarian countryside, mixed in with some urban landscapes for good measure, beautifully illustrate the emotional journey of a young woman oscillating between security and passion, stability and doom. Kristina Nikolova’s surprisingly mature feature debut can crack you up or bring tears to your eyes within a split second, serving as a reminder that everything in life is about choices and even if you make the wrong ones, a little faith, love and whiskey (in no particular order), can make everything seem worthwhile!
