Estonian politician Aadu is on a mushroom-picking expedition with his wife, when he suddenly receives a phone call by a journalist who’s accusing him of charging his holiday on his expense account. The couple is soon joined by Zäk, a drunk rock star they find lurking at a gas station. The bizarre trio continues to rove around the Baltic forests, although the rural expanses prove less and less welcoming. They eventually find refuge in an isolated chalet hidden deep in the woods, but that’s a decision they will live to regret. Toomas Hussar conjures up a surreal universe, blessed with endless reserves black humour and some brilliant touches of fear and suspense. "Mushrooming" is a hilarious look on the vapid world of fame, fortune and politics, against the smoldering darkness of the Estonian woodland. K.Th.
