A young samurai determined to restore the glory days of the past. Two gorgeous geishas fighting to the death. An ambitious plan for a spectacular double suicide. A devious yet broke whorehouse regular, forced to join the staff in order to pay back his dues. Inspired by traditional comic narrative art Rakugo, little-known Japanese master Yuzo Kawashima (one of Akira Kurosawa’s favorites) gathers a multitude of eccentric characters under the same roof - which just so happens to belong to a 1862 Tokyo whorehouse – against the backdrop of the Meiji Restoration. With a large and exceptionally talented cast, handled with a masterful subtlety equal to Robert Altman’s, Kawashima unravels a tangled web of secrets and lies, love and scheming in a burlesque merry-go-round that was voted the fifth best Japanese movie of all time by legendary magazine Kinema Junpo.
