Based on Shintarô Ishihara’s infamous novel and shot in an atmosphere of sweltering eroticism and escalating tension that will eventually reach disturbing heights, Nakahira’s seminal film was largely responsible for the anarchist teenage movie trend of the 60s, shocking mainstream Japanese audiences with its amoral approach to the dilemmas of a self-destructive generation with no dreams and no future to call their own. Charisma
