Barcelona

Ted, working in sales for the Barcelona office of a US corporation, sees his life turned upside down when his cretin cousin Fred decides to move in. Ted and Fred (Stillman regulars Taylor Nichols and Chris Eigeman), whose surname is the only thing they have in common, couldn’t be more different.

Possibly his most solid effort to date, "Barcelona" is certainly Whit Stillman’s most underrated, as the highly respected Criterion Collection (a premium classic and contemporary films DVD distributor) has honored "Metropolitan" and "The Last Days of Disco" with deluxe official releases but has yet to give his second feature the attention it deserves. Although their forced coexistence is pleasantly interrupted by beautiful girls they pick up all over town, (Mira Sorvino is amongst them), an unfortunate event will provoke a flurry of anti-American sentiment amongst the locals. As Stillman elegantly puts it, there’s something a lot deeper that separates Europe from America than the Atlantic ocean and that’s mainly the cultural gap. Mocking his own discreet directorial style, he captures the inadequacy of good manners in situations so extreme they’re bound to blow your mind. Ph.V.
