I Am Divine

She left an indelible mark on celluloid with shocking appearances on films like ?Pink Flamingos? and ?Female Troubles?, while her larger-than-life persona challenged every perception of gender, beauty and sexual identity. Yet before she was established as a timeless gay icon, Divine (aka Harris Glen Milstead) was an obese boy from Baltimore, who fell victim to relentless bullying by his schoolmates.

After the brilliant “Vito”, director Jeffrey Schwarz returns with the irresistible portrait of yet another unconventional personality, exploring every aspect of her life, from her reluctant first steps to her meteoric rise as John Waters’ ultimate muse and subversive symbol of alternative pop culture.

Delightful and unexpectedly affectionate, the film combines interviews with the infamous performer’s friends and colleagues with rare archival footage, excerpts from her films and live television appearances to reveal the person hiding behind the outrageous wigs and giant eyelashes. Th.P.
