Blackfish

"We need the Sheriff's Office to respond for a dead person at SeaWorld. Uh... a whale has eaten one of the trainers".

“We need the Sheriff's Office to respond for a dead person at SeaWorld. Uh… a whale has eaten one of the trainers”. Such devastating moments abound in Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s jaw-dropping documentary, using all the techniques of a suspense thriller to deal a mighty blow to the SeaWorld marine parks and their standard practice of holding large mammals captive for entertainment purposes.

Starting with the above grim phone call and flashing back to chronicle this terrifying accident, where a 6-ton Orca mangled one of the trainers, the film investigates the marine park staff’s criminal treatment of whales without ever feeling preachy or didactic. On the contrary, it uses the guilty confessions of former trainers, the shocking imagery from the incidents and the mind-boggling revelations about the whales’ training methods and living conditions to help viewers realize that it is man’s arrogance in captivating animals he cannot control that turns them into murderers.
