"Short Term 12" fired up the crowds at SXSW, where it won the Audience and Grand Jury Awards, seconded by the Los Angeles Film Festival’s Audience Award, while it was the only US film at the Locarno International Film Festival’s competition section.
Although it’s only Destin Daniel Cretton sophomore feature, "Short Term 12" is a shockingly mature effort by a filmmaker who approaches an extremely sensitive subject with an impeccable sense of balance no intention of glorification whatsoever. The film focuses on Grace and Mason who work as supervising staff members of a foster care facility with socially challenged children. When Jayden, a gifted but mentally abused girl is placed in their care, Grace identifies with a child she should be protecting, awakening her own personal demons. Bittersweet and disarmingly honest.
