Stand Clear of the Closing Doors
Never before has anyone managed to capture autism so effectively on film, like the talented Sam Fleischner in his solo debut.
13-year-old Ricky is an autistic boy who lives with his family in Queens, New York. When his mother scolds him over the phone for cutting school, Ricky escapes into the subway system, taking a labyrinthine journey into the underbelly of the chaotic metropolis. As hours turn into days, his mother, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, is going through her own Odyssey, desperately searching for her son while hurricane Sandy threatens to flatten everything in its wake.
Never before has anyone managed to capture autism so effectively on film, like the talented Sam Fleischner in his solo debut. Adopting an almost mesmerizing rhythm, the cinematography focuses on seemingly insignificant details allowing the narrative to dive deep inside the protagonist’s lonely field of perception, offering a unique visual experience on the verge of hallucination, while at the same time painting an alternative, highly idiosyncratic portrait of New York City and its inhabitants. Special Jury Mention at the Tribeca Film Festival. Th.P.
