Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

"Art is not a mirror to reflect the world, but a hammer with which to shape it." The above quote by Vladimir Mayakovsky opens ?Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer? and by the time the end credits roll, it seems more timely than ever before.

"Art is not a mirror to reflect the world, but a hammer with which to shape it." The above quote by Vladimir Mayakovsky opens “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer” and by the time the end credits roll, it seems more timely than ever before.

A year after the sensational arrest of Russian post-feminist band Pussy Riot and the wave of global reactions it triggered, Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin’s documentary follows the story of Nadya, Masha and Katya, the three young women arrested for “blasphemy” in Vladimir Putin’s heavily religious Russia.

Shot over six months with exclusive footage from their rehearsals and the events the band staged, this telling documentary reveals the people behind the famous balaclavas with all their humanizing idiosyncrasies. From farce to tragedy and from absurdity all the way to blatant injustice, prepare to watch a real-life 21st Century tale about a system that decided to obliterate three artists from the face of the earth, just because they crossed the line.
