The Dead and the Living

Lending her energy-filled main character her own Romanian ancestry, Austrian filmmaker Barbara Alpert re-opens the burning issue of safeguarding historical memory and modern man’s responsibility towards the past, the present and the future.

25-year-old Sita is looking for answers in her family’s past during WWII after she discovers her grandfather was a member of the SS. Her trajectory starts in Berlin and takes her all the way to Vienna, Warsow and Romania, where her family’s roots lie, along with the festering wounds and repressed guilt of her own family and the rest of Europe.

Lending her energy-filled main character her own Romanian ancestry, Austrian filmmaker Barbara Alpert re-opens the burning issue of safeguarding historical memory and modern man’s responsibility towards the past, the present and the future. Avoiding the obstacle of the eternal regurgitation of guilt, “The Dead and the Living” proposes knowing oneself and one’s identity in order to deal with the recurring nightmare of neo-Nazism. N.S.
