The Resurrection of a Bastard

Ronnie is a ruthless gangster from Amsterdam, renowned for his highly imaginative and extremely violent professional tactics. A vacuum cleaner can be used to poke your eye out, while the image of a mother protecting her son will do little to dissuade him from sending her to the netherworld without so much as a second thought

Ronnie is a ruthless gangster from Amsterdam, renowned for his highly imaginative and extremely violent professional tactics. A vacuum cleaner can be used to poke your eye out, while the image of a mother protecting her son will do little to dissuade him from sending her to the netherworld without so much as a second thought.

But all of the above describe the “old” Ronnie, because his new version is closer to a kind-hearted giant. What really happened to this devious man and what is the real reason behind his sudden transformation from a cold-hearted thug into a low profile middle-aged nobody?

His directorial debut, which recently opened the Rotterdam International Film Festival, is based on his own comic book, published in 2004, a darkly humorous and highly stylized tale of impressive artistry. A true child of the Tarantino Universe, though infused with the humidity of the Lowlands, “The Resurrection of a Bastard” is a directorial tour de force from a promising young talent everyone should watch out for. Avoiding a traditional reenactment, the director chooses to highlight intimate moments on both sides of the fence.
