The King of Comedy

Martin Scorsese makes a film about contemporary idolatry in the modern world, where celebrity worship and the illusory power of television have been elevated to a new religion. It’s also a commentary on how the entertainment industry tries to hide its hoaxes behind the spotlights.

A conceited 34-year-old man decides to abduct his favorite TV idol in order to pave the way for the comedian’s career he so desires. Martin Scorsese makes a film about contemporary idolatry in the modern world, where celebrity worship and the illusory power of television have been elevated to a new religion. It’s also a commentary on how the entertainment industry tries to hide its hoaxes behind the spotlights.

Insightful and acerbic, “The King of Comedy” was unusually prophetic, requiring audiences to tune into its unusual disposition that served up humor with a side of nausea. A box office flop at the time, it is now considered one of Scorsese’s best efforts, a testament to a filmmaker who tried his hand at a film genre that’s miles outside his comfort zone. He was eventually vindicated with one of the most unconventional films of his career. L.K.
