The Tin Drum

When his parents give him a red drum for his third birthday, Oscar decides he’s going to stop growing up as a reaction to the complicated adult relationships around him and the hypocrisy of contemporary society.

Oscar is born in Germany in 1924 with fully developed intellect. When his parents give him a red drum for his third birthday, the little boy decides he’s going to stop growing up as a reaction to the complicated adult relationships around him and the hypocrisy of contemporary society. A symbol of human consciousness in a world that’s slowly sinking in violence and absurdity, Oscar will witness a phenomenon that slowly poisons the hears of the most innocent people.

Based on this surreal premise, Volker Schlöndorff adapts the epic and deeply allegorical novel of award-winning author Günter Grass, which chronicles the rise of fascism through the eyes of an eternal child, a pitch black satire oscillating between raw, poetic images and grotesque savagery.

Winner of the Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, "The Tin Drum" screens from a restored print with an extra 20 minutes of footage, according to the director’s cut. Th.P.
