Excision
Shot in Kenya in the Pokot Tribe region, ?Excision? examines the consequences of FGM (female genital mutilation) - a turning point in a woman's life - through a series of female portraits that demonstrate the effects of this action.
To this day, girls in Kenya continue to be "cut". Between the ages of 6-15, 85% of the female population undergoes total mutilation of their external genitalia for non-medical reasons.
Long before they're fully grown, girls stand in line and suffer through this needless operation without anesthetic or analgesics, under unhygienic conditions, using the same unsterilized blade. Some will die of bleeding, some will get HIV.
Shot in Kenya in the Pokot Tribe region, “Excision” examines the consequences of FGM (female genital mutilation) - a turning point in a woman's life - through a series of female portraits that demonstrate the effects of this action.
Convictions related to FGM are so deeply rooted that there's almost no cry for help and shows of discomfort are minimal. But where do convictions end and oppression begins, shredding a woman's soul to pieces, not to mention her body?
