The Way He Looks
Daniel Ribeiro's feature debut is the most moving and sensitive LGBT film of the year, as it deals with unspoken desires as part of human nature rather than curiosity.
Leonardo and Giovana are best friends. He's blind and she has to walk him back from school everyday, talking incessantly in an effort to alleviate their boredom. But Leonardo doesn't feel independent. The constant bullying at school and his parents' overprotective attitude are beginning to wear his patience thin.
A new classmate, Gabriel, will force him to take a good long look at his life, until Leonardo finally realizes he's got feelings for him - feelings he's never dared confide in anyone else - while Giovana will resent the fact that she is not the only person in his life.
Daniel Ribeiro's feature debut is the most moving and sensitive LGBT film of the year, as it deals with unspoken desires as part of human nature rather than curiosity.
Its discreet approach fits in perfectly with the awkwardness of first love and the performances, especially Ghilherme Lobo's as Leonardo, effortlessly communicate teenage angst and unspoken desire. "The Way he Looks" was rightfully awarded the Teddy and Fipresci Awards at this year's Berlinale. P.G.
