The Past is a Grotesque Animal

What happens on and off stage when one if the most idiosyncratic bands in the world is performing live? A lot of people have probably never heard of Of Montreal, but those who have been initiated into their world and have witnessed one of their legendary live performances have no doubt surrendered, body and soul, to the band's mystique and their irrepressible frontman Kevin Barnes.

Those of you who don't belong to the latter category, can't afford to miss Jason Miller's documentary. A group of experienced musicians, who seem more like an art project than an actual band, Of Montreal's musical style has been pegged as psychedelic electro pop, but it changes directions with every album.

Some of their more theatrical shows look like a cross between Brecht and Grand Guignol, while Kevin Barnes' controversial persona - genius, depressive, sexually ambiguous, haunted by demons and often unbearable for the people around him - gives new meaning to the words cursed artist. T. Th.
