Even if someone isn't familiar with Fela Kuti's major contribution to music or the extend of his political activism, there's a lot to appreciate in Alex Gibney's layered portrait.

The Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker ("Taxi to the Dark Side", "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson") managed to fit the multi-faceted legacy of the Nigerian Afrobeat trailblazer in two hours, including his numerous stands again government oppression in Nigeria, the persecution and incarceration he had to endure, as well the mythical side of his larger-than-life personality, like his marriage to 27 women, the murder of his mother or his untimely AIDS-related death.

With the help of priceless archival material, electrifying highlights from his entrancing live shows and enlightening interviews, "Finding Fela!" is a delirious puzzle brimming with life and creativity, attempting to profile and, at the same time, understand one of the most controversial figures in contemporary music.
