The greatest surprise entry of this year's competition section of the Cannes Film Festival came from this unexpected, luscious, Rennaisance tale by the Italian director Matteo Garrone. Lustful kings and desperate queens, passing witches and fateful fairies, terrifying monsters and dragons, messengers of doom, acrobats and whores make up the sensational, orgasmic universe of this breathtaking film, which brings to life some of the famous, widely-read fairy tales in Giambattista Basile's 17-century collection, the main inspiration behind the works of Brothers Grimm.
