In his second and most autobiographical film to date, Alex van Warmerdam stirs up childhood memories and places the film in a half-finished building complex in 60s Holland.
He lashes out against the hypocrisy of Dutch society, blowing the whistle on the veiled racism, the colonial attitude and the religious fanaticism of its inhabitants from the perspective of a 12-year-old boy.
Avoiding any hint of didacticism or any accusatory tones, he used ingenious allegories and hilarious plot devices, relying on caricature to underline the absurdity and the malaise of an entire society. K.Th.
