NINOTCHKA

"Garbo laughs!" is how "Ninotchka" was promoted back in 1939. What's more, audiences laugh with her. Armed with a first-rate script (partially written by Billy Wilder), Lubitsch delivers a classic comedy that went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of its time. Three Soviet agents arrive in Paris to sell some imperial jewels. Unfortuntely, the trio seem more interested in fine dining than doing any actual work. In the meantime, the jewels' previous owner, the Duchess Swana, dispatches her lover Count Leon to Paris to collect what she views as rightfully hers. Alarmed, the Soviets send over the stern and cheerless comrade Ninotchka (Greta Garbo) to get their agents back in line. But their plan is thwarted when Ninotchka, who previously viewed the Eiffel Tower as a flawless metalic construction and love as a mere chemical reaction, begins to fall for Leon and the Western way of life.
