Volcano

After several decades of working as a school janitor, Hannes is reaching his retirement. Terrified at the thought of the complete idleness of his new life, he contemplates suicide but balks in the end. Even his relationship with his wife, Anna, is stagnant and his only way out is going out to sea with his small boat. After an embarrassing sea accident, his relationship with his wife will be reheated but only temporarily, as, during dinner one night, Anna collapses. Hannes is suddenly faced with the responsibility of taking care of his wife – as well as himself. The debut feature of Runar Runarsson, multiple award-winner for his short films, is an exemplary study of human loneliness, isolation and the desperation of sickness. A slow-burning drama with beautiful shot compositions, “Volcano” impresses with its frugal narrative and brings to mind the plain universal cinema of Terrence Malick.
