"Wild Tales" by Damián Szifrón will open the 20th Athens International Film Festival

The most hilarious black comedy of the past few years opens the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Athens International Film Festival - Opening Nights!

What would happen if we all acted based on instinct and our innermost thoughts?

Argentinian director Damián Szifrón's black comedy "Wild Tales", nominated for the Palm d'Or at the last Cannes Film Festival, is a collection of six seemingly unrelated stories, whose common denominator is how reality often forces us to rely on our most primal instincts to get by, revealing a society in deep crisis.

Touching on the concepts of infidelity, injustice, inequality and the extreme demands of everyday life, "Wild Tales" is all about people who go over the edge, giving up on civility and abandoning themselves to the undeniable pleasures of losing control!

The characters in each story are dangerously close to insanity, each crisis triggered by a specific event, but they all learn to love it, achieving a paranoid state of catharsis.

"Each short story making up this brilliant film starts off with the simple, yet unorthodox premise that everything's going to be all right but somehow it never does! Trapped in a twisted situation, they turn into these surreal beings, who don otherworldly costumes allowing them to shed their old personalities. But, at the end of the day, isn't that what we all do in similar situations? No matter how outrageous these stories, we can't help but recognize something of our selves in this movie," writes Opening Nights artistic director Orestis Andreadakis.

This unusual social satire is co-produced by Pedro Almodovar, who leaves a clear mark on the storyline, setting the stage for a film full of tricks and spectacular bursts of emotion.

The cast consists of some of the most important Argentinian actors working today, including Ricardo Darín ("Nine Queens", "The Secret in their Eyes") and María Onetto ("The Headless Woman"), while the score was composed by twice Oscar-nominated Gustavo Santaolalla ("Babel" and "Brokeback Mountain").

"Wild Tales" will premiere at the Athens Megaron on Wednesday, September 17 (invitation only), while the film will be screened again during the festival.

"Wild Tales" will be released domestically by Seven and Spentzos Film on October 2.
