Athens International Film Festival: The Opening Film

Pedro Almodóvar, the biggest name in contemporary Spanish cinema, returns to female-driven drama with his new film, “Julieta”, the ideal choice for opening film of the 22nd Athens International Film Festival!

Pedro Almodóvar, the biggest name in contemporary Spanish cinema, returns to female-driven drama with his new film, “Julieta”, the ideal choice for opening film of the 22nd Athens International Film Festival!

Nominated for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, “Julieta” is the brand-new, 20th feature by Pedro Almodóvar, as well as a familiar and entirely dedicated tribute to women from a director who’s spent the majority of his filmography worshipping the female characters inhabiting his life and his mind.

After the lively “I’m so Excited” and the mysterious “The Skin I Live in”, the Academy Award-winning director of “High Heels” and “All about my Mother” returns with the adaptation of three short stories by the Canadian author and Nobel prize winner Alice Munro.

Women-lovers, women-partners and women-mothers. Women who love. Women who endure. Women who are struck down by fate and women who don’t yield. Women at the edge of a cliff and women at the threshold of a fresh start. Stoic women and vulnerable women. All these different and contradicting versions of femininity are channeled through the new lead character of the 66-year-old filmmaker. As per usual in Almodóvar’s films, a woman is both the driver and the passenger in her own revelatory journey, as well as the spiky tour guide in his byzantine narrative.

The film stars Emma Suárez and Adriana  Ugarte, as well as Inma Cuesta, Pilar Castro and the beloved Almodóvar muse, Rossy de Palma, in smaller parts.

Synopsis:

Julieta, a classical studies teacher who is past 50, in theory leads a calm, orderly life. A chance encounter with an old acquaintance will prove to be crucial in the awakening of long-buried ghosts from her past. Julieta will face inscrutable mysteries, open wounds and pending affairs about the man she loved, the daughter she had, her parents and her own self.

The film’s premiere will take place on Wednesday, September 21st at Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall (by invitation only). The festival’s screening schedule will be announced on Wednesday, September 14th.

The film will be released in Greece by Odeon on Thursday, October 20th.

Until the announcement of the full line-up of the 22nd edition of the Athens International Film Festival at the Press Conference, which will be held on September 14th in Ianos, you can see some of the festival titles here.
