The Saragossa Manuscript

In a battle in Saragossa during the Napoleonic Wars, an officer chances upon a strange manuscript. Cornered by an enemy soldier, he nevertheless convinces him to translate it and identifies its author and hero as his grandfather, Alfons van Worden. The manuscript itself is a metaphysical frame tale involving Alfons’s journey through the Sierra Morena Mountains and his encounters with ghosts, seductive demons, libertine nobility and cabbalists. A series of both humorous and grotesque intertwined tales, ?The Saragossa Manuscript? is like a hallucinogenic drag, whose effects differ from person to person. Based on the 1815 novel by Jan Potocki and endorsed by the likes of Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Luis Buñuel and Jerry Garcia (lead of the Grateful Dead), ?The Saragossa Manuscript? is a cinematic monument that has to be visited several times to reveal its secrets.
