Stuck in an elevator, young Tommy is helplessly watching his pregnant wife getting attacked by a bunch of kids. Nine months later, he’s trying to raise his daughter on his own, no longer able to leave the house as the traumatic experience has left him crippled with agoraphobia attacks. When the mysterious gang makes another appearance, Tommy will have to face the past by returning to the titular abandoned apartment building to look for the feral creatures that seem to feed off fear itself. The relentlessly agonizing debut by Irish filmmaker Ciaran Foy, transforms the drab urban surroundings into a desolate setting straight out of hell, where civilization seems to have receded for life. Boasting a riveting performance by Aneurin Barnard, «Citadel» masterfully depicts the main character’s troubled psyche, in a tightly would mixture of suspense, terror and social allegory that won the Audience Award at SXSW.
