Damsels in Distress

A deadly female trio, who take it upon themselves to change the formerly male-dominated college campus into something, well, better – with questionable results.

Terrence Malick might have made history for the long hiatus between his films, but Whit Stillman has certainly given him a run for his money. His most recent movie comes 13 years after his previous effort ?The Last Days of Disco? and it’s strikingly different in comparison to the rest of his oeuvre: 35mm film has been abandoned in favor of digital technology and the usual suspects have been replaced by a younger generation of actors, as the director extends a hand to a more mainstream audience. His wry sense of humor remains the same though, same as the flawless dialectic segments in this camouflaged teen movie about a deadly female trio, who take it upon themselves to change the formerly male-dominated college campus into something, well, better ? with questionable results. Once a mumblecore queen, Greta Gerwig delivers her best performance to date in a film that’s not just the intellectual’s ?Clueless? (¬with an added whiff of Old Hollywood comedy) but a refreshing addition to the tired American indie genre. Ph.V.

Frequenting debutante balls with his upper-crust acronym-loving friends, Tom philosophizes with an air of phony intellectual brilliance afforded by his youth and the immense fortunes of everyone around him.
