Our Heroes Died Tonight

A fist-time director raised on Jean-Pierre Melville’s police procedurals, German Expressionist masterpieces and timeless Hollywood film noirs, he somehow managed to cram all his inspiration, every single reference and an entire army of his favorite film ghosts in a truly impressive debut.

A fist-time director raised on Jean-Pierre Melville’s police procedurals, German Expressionist masterpieces and timeless Hollywood film noirs, he somehow managed to cram all his inspiration, every single reference and an entire army of his favorite film ghosts in a truly impressive debut.

Watching the collision between two professional boxers and members of the Parisian underworld in the 60s, the director conjures up a series of images that celebrate style and good taste, surrounding his main characters with memorable supporting players that elevate “Our Heroes Died Tonight” into an imposing universe of menacing shadows, crafted with impressive artistry and a dream-like atmosphere. Fresh off its premiere at the recent Cannes Film Festival, the film is a strong contender for this year’s Golden Athena. L.K.
