You and the Night

Blending French intellect with oriental fairy tales and erotic literature, Gonzalez weaves a delicately sensual film that promises to sweep you away, provided you have the courage to succumb to its wiles.

The clock strikes midnight and Ali and Matthias are preparing for yet another orgy in their fancy Parisian apartment. The party includes their transvestite maid, the Slut, the Stud, the Star and the Adolescent. If the above description isn’t enough to get you in the mood, then don’t bother making the descent into the atmospheric and philosophical universe of Yann Gonzalez.

In his first feature, the French director does not hesitate to fit Eric Cantona with a prosthetic penis, attempting a retelling of de Sade’s “Philosophy in the Bedroom” in a parallel dimension. Blending French intellect with oriental fairy tales and erotic literature, Gonzalez weaves a delicately sensual film that promises to sweep you away, provided you have the courage to succumb to its wiles. Young Alain-Fabien Delon is just the cherry on top, with his soulful performance and watery blue eyes bringing back memories of his unforgettable father. Ph.V.
