Nothing Bad Can Happen

One of the most controversial films in this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the shocking debut of the German-born filmmaker is inspired by real-life events.

An orphaned young man, who has found refuge in a religious group in modern-day Hamburg, discovers the father he never had in the face of a seemingly quiet family man, who will deliver him – albeit temporarily – from a life of aimless wandering.

As he will soon realize in the most traumatic way possible, he’s destined to play the martyr in a series of inhuman tortures inflicted by his sadistic host. The father figure tries to bend the kid’s unshakable religious belief and drive him over the edge.

One of the most controversial films in this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the shocking debut of the German-born filmmaker is inspired by real-life events. Inappropriate for anyone with a weak stomach, Katrin Gebbe’s disturbing first film is a nightmarish parable on fluctuating limits and the covert dangers of blind faith. L.K.
