Eliza Hittman’s stunningly beautiful directorial debut chronicles the coming-of-age story of a 14-year-old girl during a long, suffocatingly hot summer, against a backdrop of South Brooklyn housing projects and nearby beaches.

Wanting to experience first-hand the sexual escapades her best friend is always talking about, 14-year-old Lila throws herself at an older boy, but the choices she’s about to make will lead her down a dangerous path. Venturing into familiar teenage territory, like a sleep-walker wandering around in a daze, this delightful film captures unripe teenage lust, the yearning for the unknown and the desperate need for human connection.

“It Felt Like Love” is an ethereal piece of filmmaking with beautifully nuanced cinematography and an intoxicating summer atmosphere, exploring the confused psyche of a young girl beckoned by adulthood. Newcomer Gina Piersanti is the epicenter of it all, delivering a performance that can only be described as a revelation. L.K.
