Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia

Ingenious, headstrong and an excellent conversationalist, Gore Vidal embodied the voice of American consciousness, rebelling against the establishment.

Ingenious, headstrong and an excellent conversationalist, Gore Vidal embodied the voice of American consciousness, rebelling against the establishment. His cosmopolitan lifestyle, privileged upbringing and his friendships with people like Tennessee Williams and Paul Newman, along with his increasingly progressive literary works that challenged public sentiment and his witty quotes that entertained readers and television viewers alike, turned him into a legend.

But what makes him truly immortal is his passionate rhetorics that severely criticized the ills of American society and politics. Nicholas Wrathall’s documentary beautifully captures Vidal’s sharp wit through interviews with the man himself, as well as his near and dear, tracing a truly fascinating personality who raged war against selective amnesia when it comes to American history, and was equally loved and hated for stating "We learn nothing because we remember nothing".
