Oh Boy

With a debut harbouring some serious Woody Allen-style irony, Jan Ole Gerster paints the bittersweet portrait of a character stuck somewhere between careless youth and pained adult.

Niko is nearing 30 and has decided to break up with his girlfriend right when his dad leaves him high dry after he learns he has dropped out of college. Meanwhile, a government psychologist has decided he’s got a serious problem. Despite this avalanche of bad news, all Niko cares about is getting a cup of coffee and wandering the streets of Berlin, where he was born and raised.

With a debut harbouring some serious Woody Allen-style irony, Jan Ole Gerster paints the bittersweet portrait of a character stuck somewhere between careless youth and pained adult. The stunning black & white photography and jazzy soundtrack set the tone for Niko’s feel-good existential deadlock, played out against modern-day Berlin, irresistibly attractive and unbearably nostalgic at the same time. N.S.

    All is Lost

Can a film with a cast of one, very little dialogue and the endless blue sea as its sole location keep you nailed to your seat for one hour and 45 minutes? The answer is yes, if it's directed by J.C. Chandor.
