When Animals Dream

Everyone in their coastal town steers clear of Marie. But their fearful attitude and her wheelchair-bound mother, suffering from a mysterious illness, are the least of her problems. Marie's body has started changing, long hair growing on her chest and back, forcing her to search for answers concerning her family’s hidden past and the reasons behind this sudden transformation.

The consequences are severe, not just for her but for the people around her. Jonas Alexander Arnby's debut is not just another werewolf movie, nor does it rely on suspense thriller conventions to culminate the tension.

Following Tomas Alfredson's example, whose masterfully executed "Let the Right One In" refused to fall in any one category, the Danish newcomer made a favorable impression at the Critic's Week in this year's Cannes Film Festival. More than anything else, "When Animals Dream" is a traumatic coming-of-age story, confirming that Scandinavia leads the way in contemporary horror. N.S.
