McCabe and Mrs Miller

In the early 1900s, in a small town on the Western border that's transitioning into urbanity, an enigmatic man with an entreprenurial spirit and a lovesick hooker build their version of the American Dream on the foundations of a whorehouse, while the local organized interests decide they want a part of the action.

An anthem to individual initiative and condemned romantic heroes, this thoroughly unconventional western full of claustrophobic half-lit interiors, disguised lyricism, intuitive musical interventions by Leonard Cohen, opium fumes and the deep melancholy of those who staked their lives on their dreams and lost, remains one of the more realistically reconstructed period films ever.

Anyone who had accused Altman of lack of empathy with his main characters and a tendency to allow cynicism and misanthropy resonate through his films as a result of his own worldview, should probably take a closer look at the director's emotional love letter to all the beautiful losers in this world. Brewster McCloud

A provocative and often surrealist satire of American society, Brewster McCloud is a surprising variation on the Icarus myth brimming with eccentricity and black humor, told as a coming-of-age story about sexual awakening.

    M*A*S*H

    M*A*S*H

Robert Altman conjures up a naughty anti-military proposition through the eyes of a medical team and their rather hilarious methods of dealing with the everyday horrors around them, while stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in the Korean War.

Making his way through the organized chaos of layered dialogues, a noisy score and a largely improvised script - not to mention the performances - Altman builds a precious behavioral comedy for the ages.
