Sexuality caught between private and public spheres

The clash between the public and the private sphere has had a massive influence on contemporary Israeli society – which also happens to be the common denominator in all Eytan Fox films and one of his main themes. The other important narrative strand in his oeuvre is his characters’ homosexuality. From his first ever film, he brought the audi- ence face to face with issues never before discussed in a public setting, exposing society’s inability to deal with homo- sexuality, much less understand and accept it. This year, the Athens International Film Festival in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel in Athens, presents a full Eytan Fox retrospective, including his first two shorts, "Time off" and "Gotta Have Heart". His early films set the pace for the radical body of work that was to follow, exploring sexuality and blatant contradiction between its public and private expressions.
