Chuck Norris vs Communism

27/9/2015, 18:00, Ιντεάλ

Why does Irina Nistor have the most recognizable voice in Romania, after Nicolae Ceaușescu? Because she dubbed the entire cast of American action movies in secret screenings of illicit VHS tapes in the 80s, including beefy action heroes like Stallone, Van Damme and Chuck Norris. A documentary that's a real punch in the gut!

In 80s Romania, under Ceaușescu rule, access to anything originating in the West – including films – was almost non-existent due to the prevalent "ideological purity". So it was only natural that people would start organizing secret neighborhood screenings of illicit VHS tapes to get a small taste of the Western world and its beefcake de- lights, like Stallone, Van Damme and Chuck Norris. All of it dubbed by the same voice, acting out all the dialogues in every single film. Ilinca Calugareanu’s award-winning documentary isn’t just a case study of how the power of the unknown – especially when forbidden – can change an entire society. It’s also a tribute to Irina Nistor, the translator who single-handedly dubbed the entire cast of every action film that came her way, quickly becoming the most recognizable voice in Romania after Nicolae Ceaușescu!
