So what’s inside that motherboard? Well, mercury for starters, and also cadmium, lead and a host of other toxic and carcinogen substances in sufficient concentrations to class your innocent-looking PC as dangerous waste when it dies. Old computers are shipped illegally to Latin America, Africa and Asia to be recycled. It is estimated that 20 to 50 million tons of e-garbage are dumped on developing countries each year, with China maintaining the lion’s share. Every day millions of computers are mutilated, cremated and washed in acid baths by armies of impoverished workers. It is they ? as well as the environment- that bear the toll of this illegal practice.
