It all began when a Seattle man died after having had sexual intercourse with a horse. Director Robinson Devor’s investigations led him to infiltrate a closed caste of zoophiles who agreed to reveal fragments of their unfamiliar but nevertheless coherent system of thought. Despite its controversial subject matter, Zoo mercifully steers clear of sanctimoniousness and cheap thrills, and attempts to present man’s most extreme attempt to become one with nature with a mysticism that borders on religiosity. Employing lyrical shots, as well as an evocative soundtrack that furthers intensifies the sense of mystery, Zoo is a study on a subculture that we fail to comprehend in its entirety. The movie was presented at Cannes Film Festival as part of the Directors Fortnight.
