When the directors of “The Swell Season” decided to accompany Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglovà, the eponymous musical duo who starred in the adorable “Once”, on their world tour, they thought they would document the creative process of two gifted musicians. What they eventually captured is the chronicle of the demise of their relationship, under the weight of the sudden fame following their Oscar win and the very different reactions to the success that followed. Through personal interviews, concert footage and discussions (and arguments) between its two leads, the gorgeously shot, black-and-white documentary marries wonderful music with disarming honesty to illustrate a bittersweet but hopeful story.
