24th Athens International Film Festival

Oscar-winner Pawel Pawlikowski's “Cold War” to be screened on the opening night in attendance of the director!

The 24th Athens International Film Festival has selected as its opening film one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, which aptly won the Best Director award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Pawel Pawlikowski's “Cold War” is a stunning and incurably romantic journey through time which will usher in the 24th Athens International Film Festival with a nationwide premiere of the film, to be attended by the tremendous Polish director himself!

Five years after “Ida”, which won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, a film that added to an already exceptional career spanning more than twenty years and including films such as the award-winning “Last Resort” (2000) and “My Summer of Love” (2004), one of the most notable directors, who  introduced us to Polish cinema, delivers a masterpiece with “Cold War”. The film, which is bound to excite your senses, constitutes an unforgettable journey through the eventful milestones of a great love as it passionately and uncompromisingly tries to endure one of the most tumultuous decades of the 20th century.

On the occasion of the commencement of the 24th Athens International Film Festival  and given the director's attendance the Festival will present a complete retrospective of Pawel Pawlikowski's work with the showing of the following films:

Ida (2013)
The Woman in the Fifth (2011)
My Summer of Love (2004)
Last Resort (2000)
The Stringer (1998)

Some words about the film “Cold War”

It all starts in Poland in 1949 with everyday people standing before a recorder singing polish songs about the woes of love. The songs are being recorded by a committee in search of authentic melodies and talented singers for the creation of an ambitious musical club. It is at those auditions that Victor(Tomasz Kot), the maestro, will meet and fall in love with the beautiful young Zula (Joanna Kulig).  As they travel through Warsaw, Berlin, Paris and Yugoslavia, the highly passionate couple will struggle to come together, they will have to compromise, face dilemmas and jealousy and try their luck in the West before risking a return to Poland.

In Pawlikowski's deeply romantic film, love is but a war the outcome of which will depend on borders and limitations with the ultimate struggle being that of survival of love. Having enriched the film with an exciting musical mosaic made up of Jazz, Rock'n'Roll and folk melodies, the distinguished Polish director surrounds the utterly evocative performances by Tomasz Kot and Joanna Kulig with a black and white frame of unspeakable beauty and with a narration praising the ardour and sacrifices of great loves in a cinematic ballad which promises to remain unforgettable.
