Fear and loathing in the confines of a trapped submarine. The appearance of a stranger forces crew members to resort to their darkest instincts, unable to find a way out. The loopy Canadian auteur mixes genres and concepts in a unique movie cocktail, featuring Charlotte Rampling, Mathieu Amalric, Ariane Labed and Andreas Apergis.
Renowned for his eccentric set pieces, our beloved Guy Maddin has managed to make his oeuvre synonymous to a parallel universe that defies all convention. His latest film is a brilliant addition to the Maddin pantheon, a black comedy full of fantasy and mystery, co-directed with Evan Johnson. A stranger mysteriously appears in a submarine that’s trapped underwater with a volatile cargo. The terrified crew will try to escape, taking the audi- ence for a ride in their darkest fears. The eclectic cast shares different roles or, occasionally, takes on more than one, featuring Charlotte Rampling, Mathieu Amalric, Ariane Labed and Andreas Apergis. This strange hybrid is a testament to the Canadian auteur’s desire to arouse our senses and maybe even test our patience.
