Moscow, Belgium

Cannes.

Christophe Van Rompaey’s debut film could not start on a more surreal premise: somewhere in the working class suburb of Moscow, in Belgium, Matty crashes her car on a truck carrying lollies from Italy. During the heated argument that ensues, Matty and the truckdriver Johny realize they’re simply made for each other. Meanwhile, Matty’s estranged husband, professor Werner, is seriously starting to consider whether he’s more interested in one of his students. Maintaining a fine balance between romantic comedy and family drama and aided by his excellent cast -lead by a brilliant Barbara Sarafian- Van Rompaey delivers an offbeat, endearing love story. One of this year’s sweetest films, Moscow, Belgium was featured in the Critics’ Week section at Cannes.
