One Shot

For more than ten years since the drawing up of the Dogme 95 manifesto, calling for more purity in filmmaking, the Danish have made a tradition of directing intense family dramas, free of directorial tricks and gimmicks; Linda Wendel is no exception. Starting off from a simple premise (a young woman returning to her mother’s house after a two-year absence, only to find her with another man) and featuring a mere three characters, Wendel directs a fast-paced, almost frenzied drama on sexuality and family, while her decision to eschew editing but shoot the whole film in one take makes the events on screen seem even more intimate and tangible for the spectator. A remarkable achievement.
