An immature street hustler sees his carefree life fall to pieces when his ex-girlfriend comes out of nowhere, toting the son he never knew he had. Sean Baker directs an ingeniously disarming drama about unexpected twists on the road to happiness.
Lucky is from Ghana but was raised in the USA. He makes his living by fishing customers out of the streets of Manhattan to sell them labeled clothes in a good price. The store where he takes them belongs to Levon, an Armenian wholesaler from Lebanon, who keeps the illegal merchandise at the back room of the store. The carefree life of Lucky is overturned when an ex-girlfriend appears out of nowhere and uploads a kid on him saying it’s his child. At the same time, Levon struggles to save his marriage.
Transforming once again into his advantage the limitations of a very low budget, Baker points his camera on the lives of those fighting every day to escape from the social marginalization. A very small crew, a digital camera at hand and amateur actors in roles that are slightly far from their own origins (the film owes its title to its protagonist, Prince Adu) comprise a genius drama – in its bittersweet simplicity – around the oddities hidden behind the pursuit of happiness.
A Special Mention was awarded in the Locarno Festival to the film that introduced Baker to the wider festival circle as one of the rapidly emerging talents of the American independent cinema.
