Athens Blues

29/9/18, 17:45, Odeon Opera 1

On a hot summer night, a six-year old boy runs away from home and wanders around Athens.  Throughout the night he encounters nine different stories, each a piece of a city that never sleeps.  A friendly and impulsive film with Betty Livanou, Ilias Logothetis, Minas Hatzisavvas and Alekos Alexandrakis leading a cast who improvise in front of the camera in a most entertaining way. In his most experimental phase, Panousopoulos relies on the comfort of Mini-DV and presents nine improvisations against the background of Athens in the August. A mosaic of characters of every age, played by famous and upcoming actors, roam streets filled with Stelios Vamvkakaris’ blues.

During this summer slump, the Athenians spend their days, share their agonies, fall in love, comment on passers by and reflect on their own existence. Every piece of this mosaic sheds a light on an aspect of the director’s personality. Many considered the film to be a satire but the truth is much simpler: «Athens Blues» is a love letter by Panousopoulos to summertime Athens. Th.K.
