Uprising: Hip Hop and the LA Riots

1988 saw the release of N.W.A.’s "Fuck tha Police", a seminal track for the hip hop culture, indicating the underlying tension between the African-American community and the Los Angeles Police Department. The final straw came three years later, when a video documenting the savage beating of African-American Rodney King by LAPD officers made its way to the news, fuelling some of the most violent riots in US history.

For a few days Los Angeles surrendered to flames, violence, vandalism and shoot-outs, forcing the government to send tanks to patrol the streets of the city. Through cinder and smoke, "Uprising: Hip Hop and the LA Riots" chronicles the events that would mark hip hop forever, casting Snoop Dogg in the role of narrator and featuring testimonies by Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Ice-T, explaining how they channelled their rage over social injustice through beats, rhymes and fire.
