Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present

The documentary "Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present" focuses on her 2010 MoMA retrospective in New York, where the eccentric artist basically exhibited herself, by sitting still in a chair for 7 ½ hours straight, without drinking, eating or going to the bathroom. For the duration of a month, 750.000 people sat across from her and got lost in the eyes of the 63-year-old grandmother of performance art, as she has taken to calling herself.

Born to two national heroes in Tito’s Yugoslavia, Marina Abramovic began her career in Belgrade in the 70s, where she was considered stark raving mad, and continued to wander the world of performance in Amsterdam with her partner Ulay. The couple gained notoriety in their effort to map the limits of love and co-existence through live representations, while at the same time putting performance on equal footing with other art forms. This visual testimony is here to arouse your curiosity and provoke the eternal question: is this really art? K.Th.
